A HALF CENTURY OF HANSBORO HISTORY - By F. L. Leftwich
It is fitting that as the village of Hansboro prepares to celebrate its
50th anniversary, we pause and review its history.
Hansboro derived its name from U. S. Sen. H. C. Hansborough of North
Dakota. The village came into being in the fall of 1905. When the
railroad arrived here, this was a well settled community. Some of the
pioneers of that time cameas early as 1883 and 1884.
Before the advent of the Great Northern branch line, the settlers traded
and transacted business at Rolla and Cartwright, Manitoba. Thomas L.
Lawson finished surveying the townsite for the Dakota Development Co.
August 30, 1905 and building started in the town, the first
lumber being hauled from Rolla.
F. H. Murdick and James Moylon built a hotel that year. Nelson and Paetow
also erected a hotel and started a much larger one, whichwas never
finished. The Hansboro State Bank started in the fall of 1905 in the
building now occupied by the Friends in Council library and the bank
building was the first on the townsite. Mr. Hannafin was cashier and in
July 1906, C. E. Blackorby and others purchased the bank and Mr.
Blackorby became cashier. The Bank of Hansboro, with B. L. Thomas in
charge, also was opened in 1906.
D. A. Blackburn opened a drugstore in the building later purchased by J.
B. Smith, who started a confectionery store. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have
resided here continuously since 1906. Other pioneer business places and
shops werethe R. L. Boise tin ship, Ed Lakeman's barber shop, Nels
Johnson's and ChrisOrton's meat markets and Jake Rabinovich's
restaurant. Besides these, Wm. Hooser and had a pool room, with the town
hall upstairs. J. R. Wills did some draying and later had the post office
with a store in connection. The pool roomwas later taken over by Frank
Grimes and about 1919 by E. L. Clattubuck.

Letter to James Oliver Hoosier from his second cousin Grace Anderson
Mrs. G. Anderson Billings MT.
815 N. 30th St.
July 20, 1994
Billings, MT. 59101-0943
Dear Jim,
I am Harry Hoosiers sister Grace. He hassent me a copy of your
letter of Jan. 6, 1994; also copy of the Hoosier Family Tree as compiled
by your Aunt Rose. Our dead brother Grant was very muchinto genealogy,
having married into the Mormon Faith. He did a lot of such work at the
Archives in Salt Lake City. But when he died Harry was the only one of
us who could get to where he had lived and try to straighten out his
affairs. Grants wife Ruth having died a couple of years before. Harry
justpacked up everything Ruth's sister had not taken when Ruth died.
Harry neverwent thru Grants things after he got them home to Las Vegas
so he doesn't know exactly where everything is. Harry has had nothing
but trouble for the last several months. First his house was vandalized
one night while he was atwork. His daughter came over to help him clean
up and he and she drove to her house stopping first for groceries to cook
supper. When they got to her place it was burned to the ground. She
lost everything but the old work clothes she had on, jeans and sneakers
and T-shirt. A month or so later early onemorning Harry was asleep when
his electric organ caught fire in his living room. Fortunately he had a
great granddaughter staying with him and she awokehim and got him out.
His living room was completely gutted and everything else in his hose
smoke damaged. The insurance company has been cleaning and packing up
everything in the house and Harry has been living in a motel. He has
bought a new house and sold the original but is still not mover. I am
telling you all this because I'm sure he has not had time to write to
you, butmaybe he called you about it. Anyway the reason for this letter
is to tell you a few things about our side of the Hoosier Family and to
assure you that we are definitely on the same branch of the tree. You
Grandfather Oliver Morton, whom we had never heard of, was a brother of
our father's father, CharlesS. who was married to Jessie Maine. So that
makes your father Harold and our father Willard full first cousins. So I
guess you and me are second cousins, would you say "once remover"? Wish
we had known about you when we had ourfirst and only family reunion in
1992. There were only 24 of us here so itwasn't a big one but we met
some nice Hoosiers we had never seen before. Myfather's youngest sister
named Pearl Eckert lived in Canada. I think BritishColumbia. She and
our mother always exchanged Christmas Cards. My dad andmother went to
see her one winter with Emma and Bill Aikens. I know they went by boat,
so it must have been on the coast and I think my mother said she had a
family of big boys and they were all fishermen. This trip was made
probably in the early 50's. I can't remember the name of the town and
none ofthe relatives could find them when we were planning the reunion.
Maybe you could find out something about them from there. Pearl isn't
listed on Roses'chart. Nor is my dads two youngest brothers, David
Lester and Charles Garland, nicknamed all his life "Boyd". I don't
suppose Harry has answered you questions about our family so I'll try and
give you a short history. Our father, Willard Alfred was born Sept. 12,
1878, the oldest son of Charles and Jessie Maine Hoosier. They spelled
it Hooser. He and out mother, Fanny Mae Lemonwere married March 15,
1904. She was 17 years and he 25. Harry was born inDec. of 1904. Cora
in Oct. 1906. I in April of 1909 and Grant in Nov. 1910. Our father
died in June of 1960. Our mother died in October 1986, a little over two
months before she would have been 1. No children.

Emma and William lived in many places through out their lives. Emma was
the peacemaker andthe soft spoken woman who tried to keep Pop from
playing favorites with thegrandchildren, however after her passing, he
did just that. Sharon Wills remembers the sound her shoes made when she
walked at. Emma had less than an eighth grade education. She was a
gentile spoken woman and was loved by everyone. According to Lenny her
family may have been very poor and the china doll may have been the only
toy she may have gotten. I suspect that maybe the metal head doll was
here, it also could be Hazel's. Joy Davis file. From the files of Joy Smith

William Aikins was a retired carpenter Social Security536-10-6759 A. He
built sets for Paramount sudios in Los Angeles, CA. He also built St.
Martins College in Lacey, WA., sometime before 1922. The pictures taken
of Hazel and Lenny with the dolls a Christmas were taken around 1920.
William also moved a lot in his life so one day Emma bought a piano
hoping sto stop the moving. It worked! It was so heavy to move they
stayed in Tacoma. Karla currently has this piano. (I call it the
Anchor). "Pop" had an 8th grade education. Lenny remembers as a father
he had a temper. As a grandfather he tended to play favorites, per
Sharon, he gave her skating lessons, Jessie a horse named Brandy and Max
received a car (1950 or 51 Pontiac). When Pop and Harry and Roy were
together they all would fight.....if one saidthe sun was yellow the
other would say that it was blue and the third wouldargue tht it was
green! sharon never felt it serious fighting...it was theirway of
communication! When he got to sick to stay alone he was moving nextdoor
to Lenny in Puyallup, that is the house I remember hin in! One day he
crashed his car and they took his keys away, he never drove again. When
I was young he had a small house in Puyallup, WA and he had the greatest
toys, ametal horse with a lasso and he jumped in circles swinging his
lasso and a small dog that had a ball on a string in his mouth it would
spin and look likeit was chasing the ball. Pop kept cookies at hand
every time we came over.Pop died when I was seven years old. I haven't
seen the dog since then andam unsure of where it is to this dy. He
belonged to a Carpenters Union and was part of a good fellowship club,
where upon the death of a member they sentin some money and supposedly
upon their death their family would receive a certain amount of money,
although at the time of Pop's death there was no money to give the
family.

My memories were of her searching river beds for pretty rocks and other
things. She took us camping every summer for a week. Sometimes Max and
Joann would come with "the tribe",she called them that, and we would
play with them. On Saturday afternoons she would come over and do her
laundry and sometimes get her hair permed by Sharon. She taught us how
to make the perfect marshmellow, draw things on fungus, and search for
aggot and other cool rocks! I was 13 when she died. I never really knew
about the dolls till after she died. Her dolls were the Amberg Victory
Doll, The large compo baby doll (wearing her baby clothers), the little
bisque doll and the small trunk filled with dool clothes, which she had
made as a girl.

Lenny Aikins is a bit of a daredevil, skydives into the fair every year
and is also a carpenter, among other talents. Ifdeath proves to be the
price of pursuing life, then so be it. We will all die, and then all
will be meaningless again. If given the possibility, why nottake it?
