Genealogy of Hoosiers as Emma Strissel and Rose Alice Hoosier recall
To all the descendants of Emma Agnes Albertina Strissel and Oliver Morton
Hoosier
This is to bea genealogy as complete as we, Emma and Rose Alice Hoosier,
her daughter canrecall.
Mother's (Emma's) family came from Germany, near Danzig. It is a family
story of how Grandma (Joanna Banke) and Grandpa Strissel (Frederick
William) lived only 50 miles from each other in Germany, but never met,
and how, when Grandma's brother (Herman Jr.) and Grandpa (Frederick
William) were ontheir way across the Atlantic they shared pictures
(miniatures, I believe) of their sisters (still at home in Germany) and
later married the girls.
Grandmother Strissel (Joanna Banke) evidently had a fairly good
education. Sheworked as a goose girl sometime in her girlhood, and used
to tell how the old gander leader would start out with a quacked "I get
up" and how all the geese said "me too", and followed him. Whether or
not she used this to reprimand her children in copycat moods, I do not
know
In any case, I, Rose have used this object lesson throughout my years of
teaching to connect the "me too"responses of my students.
Emma's Family
Maternal grandparents of Emma - Herman Banke and Mary Papenfus
Maternal Grandfather was from Germany and a shoemaker (Rose speaking -
Mother used to say " a little Jewish shoemaker with curly black hair")
but in the record from which I recopy this I have written "curly black
hair" "He was a little man."
Maternal Grandmother (maiden name -Mary Papenfus) married the above man
- Herman Banke. He died and grandmother married again, but this husband
refused to come to America so Grandmother Banke picked up her two
daughters, Wilhelmina and Joanna (Emma's mother) fromthe Banke marriage
leaving the second husband in Germany to follow her son, Herman Banke
Jr., who had immigrated to America earlier. Grandmother Banke lived with
Mother's (Emma's) family when Emma was a child - the Strissels
Papenfus - Banke union spawned three children
1. Herman Banke Jr. married PaulineStrissel, the sister of Frederick
William Strissel - resulting in a daughternamed Ida Strissel Sheriden -
This aunt died at McMinnville, Oregon.
2. Wilhelmina Banke
3. Johanna Maria Banke married Fredrick William Strissel Jr. -Emma's
Parents
Mama (Emma Strissel) was born at Winsted, Minnesota in Mcloud County,
Sept. 1 - 2 (midnight) in 1872. Mother (Emma Strissel) was baptized on
confession of faith at the age of 11, joining the Evangelical Church.
She married Oliver Morton Hoosier, May 24, 1890 at Andover, South
Dakota.
Her mother (Joanna Maria Banke Strissel) had died in childbirth at about
theage of 40, and mother only 16 or so had taken over the care of the
family.Only her brother Herman Jr. was older and she took care of the
household fora year or more until Grandfather (Frederick William
Strissel) married Step grandma, who was only about 21 or so. There was a
conflict between the two girls, so Emma "went out to work" keeping house
for (later to be) Uncle Charley(Oliver Morton Hoosiers full brother) and
Aunt Jessie Hooser. * Note - thisspelling is not an error. The name
had a least two spellings in old lettersthe family has and the branch of
the family living in Wisconsin still spellsit this way. It was changed
in our branch during Emma and Oliver's married life, living as they did
near enough to Indiana (the Hoosier State) to have people begin to call
them "Hooshur" and to spell it as we now do.
The children of this marriage were Elsie, Harold, Lillian, Everett, Edgar
and Rose.
Paternal Grandparents of Emma - Strissel
Emma Agnes Albertina Strissel dictating to daughter Rose Alice
Hoosier - "My Grandparents, the Von Strissels had 12 boys. The Von
Strissels lived and owned.

DJO - IN MY RESEARCH I DISCOVERED THAT RACHAEL HAUSER JESSUP IS SISTER TO
JONATHAN DAVID HOOSER
A letter from Rachel Jessup to J. D. Hooser and family as follows:
Belmore, Indiana
J. D. Hooser and family
Nov. 6th 1862
Your letter was received just one month after it was writtenand we
were glad to learn that you were yet alive. We heard that you were
killed in the fight with the Indians etc. etc.
Out conference went off well except in the case of brother Shigley.
He had been preaching spiritualism butthe conference retained him. Our
Preacher is an eastern man by the name ofWhite. My circuit is Cole
Creek among the Sesechmilksick. The war excitement is not so great as
formerly. The people have got used to hearing of fire and slaughter.
Times are good in some respects. Plenty to eat and money plenty.
Health good and weather fine at present. The 24th there was a 7-inch
snow. The green woods with every leaf covered (loaded) with snow
exceeded anything we have seen. Jacob Vance is dead. He died at
Hellena, Arkansa the21st of last month. He took chills and they verged
in the direction of consumption and took him off. Elizabeth takes it
quite hard.
Hiram has been discharged and got home today and there is a glad set
here now. Jackson is somebetter than he was when you left. Leah and
her man are going to move 12 miles south of Rockville just over the
County line on the railroad.
Jacob Mater is in the army. He was at Keokuk the last account. His
family is in DavisCounty, Iowa. We cannot tell you what Regiment he is
in. We would like toknow whether you were wounded or not and whether
Jim's horse got away from the Indians. John Russel and family are here
living in Belmore. Isaac Asburyis pop (?)
William Culver has sore eyes and Hannah is staying there.
The dayof the election Douglas Payton said in the presence of some
returned soldiersthat Negroes had as much right to vote as they. The
gentleman was handed from one to another by hand and foot until he will
not forget the election of 1862 while he lives.
Old Baker at the Morlans Mills is dead and the west partof the damn
there is washed out.
Religion is at a low ebb here, yet the prospect is brightening. I wish I
was out there to preach a while for the pioneers.

A letter from Sarah Hooser toHannah Bartlett as follows:
Dear Sister June the 14,1857
I take this opportunity to inform you that we are all well at this
time and hope that these few lines will find you enjoying the same
blessing. Ihave not written to you before because I ha nothing of
importance to write. And have nothing much to write yet but as you have
not thought it worth whileto scratch a line to me I would write a few
lines to you to let you know that my affection still clings to you. Lucy
was here three weeks ago last Saturday. She is at John Whitcombs now and
Bob and Bet is well and Frank cannot walk yet, and as I came home from
Clinton I saw Mary Beard or Cheedle it usedto be and she wanted to know
when I heard from you and she sent her respectsto you and said that she
would like to see you. Charlie has grown so that you would not know
him. He can crawl everywhere and climb up anything that hecan get hold
of. His hair is a light brown and as curly as it can be. It has been a
very backward spring here since it has turned warn it has rained almost
constant. Ellen is almost as large as I am. She weighs 120 lbs. I send
my respects to Mr. Johnson and Mary and Andrew and my love more
especiallyto you. So no more but remains, your affectionate sister
until deathSarah Hooser to Hannah Bartlett
It is thought that Sarah was part Afro-American ancestry as many of
the descendants espectially the girls had heart problems associated with
negroid blood at the time and Sybil Hooser, a grandaughter who died in
child birth. The baby was a throw back and was obviously part
afro-american child.
Supposed to be 1/8 or 1/4 to 1/2 Afro-American according to the notes of
cousin Marlene Hooser Ninteman.

Dear Darrell,November 28,2001
Greetings from the San Francisco Bay. I just saw your email posting
concerning the Bartlett girls from John Bartlett and Sophia Reeder. I do
not know much about them and have been trying to find out more about them
for years, but have not much luck. Their daughter Elizabeth is my great
great Grandmother. She married Robert William Gosnell, who was my
maternal grandfather's grandfather. It goes like this:
I amNathan Ward Pyles, the son of
Sandra Jean Gosnell, the daughter of
Max DavisGosnell, the son of
Albert James Gosnell, the son of
Robert William Gosnell and Elizabeth Bartlett.
Now, I have heard an old family story from my grandfather (Max
Gosnell) that this John Bartlett was either a direct descendent from
Josiah Bartlett, the singer of the Declaration of Independence, or his
great+Uncles. I was wondering if you had heard any such story before? I
look forward to hearing from you. (By the way, I was just in Vermilion
County, Clinton,Indiana last Wednesday) Cheers,
Nate Pyles

I am looking for information on James William Eckert, Foster
Franklin Eckert, Charles A. Hooser, George Harrison, and Taylor Aikins.
These relatives were all in the Gadsby area from, I believe, about 1905
to about 1920. They were farmers. Some of them had a band they called
"The MapleLeaf Orchestra". The orchestra was made up of Eckert,
Harrison, Mcpherson andNourse. Anyone who may have any type of
information on these families pleasecontact me. Also anyone who knows
anything about "The Gadsby and District Pioneers association".
Notes
1 somewhere along the lines the spelling of Hooser went to being
spelled Hoosier by some.
Anne Miller author I believe that Charles Albert Hoosier/Hooser left to
go back to the States about the sametime my grandmother Pearl left for
Usk. That would be about in 1920. I know her one child was born in
Stettler, Alberta on April 7th, 1920 and died in Terrace, B.C. hospital
on July 16th, 1920. Usk is about 19 km from Terrace.

This file is a part of the Bureau of Land Management Database for the
states of Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
Dataedited and prepared by Joy Fisher, jfisher@ucla.edu.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) inherited the functions of the
General Land Office when it was established by Congress in 1946. The
South Dakota Land Patents Database, derived from General Land Office and
BLM information, contains deeds (primarily patents) issued by the United
States in the region now known as the State of South Dakota between 1859
and 1995. While BLM has been referred to as "the Nations record keeper",
it is the National Archives that actually keeps the files. The BLM,
maintains diagrammatic plats known as Master Title Plats, which depict
lands which are owned by the United States and lands which are patented.
However, these plats do not have any information about who the lands were
patented to. That information which has only been available after tedious
research, it is available now in this database.
The South Dakota Land Patents Database contains the following information
for each land transaction: date, location (township, range, section,
meridian), name of person the land was patented to, case type, conveyance
type, county, and the patent document identification number.
Using this information you can obtain copies of the patent filefor $10
from the National Archives at the following address:
