Obituary: Jack Ninteman laid the foundation for a career inthe
construction industry as a youth in Lancaster, where his grandfather
helped mold him into a skilled carpenter.
Later, after serving as a Navy Seabeeduring the Korean War, Mr.
Ninteman would join a family construction firm founded 50 years ago in
San Diego by his great uncles.
As a construction superintendent, he was involved in the building of
churches, additions to the University of San Diego campus, the expansion
of Mission Valley Center and the refurbishing of the Prado at Balboa
Park. Mr. Ninteman, who retired from Ninteman Construction in 1986, died
of multiple myeloma cancer Monday at his Lakeside home. He was 66.
A Lakeside resident since 1959, Mr. Ninteman built his dream house
in the early 1990s on property he owned across the street from his
original residence. The new home, a Southwestern-style steel-framed
structure, was designed by architect Roger Utt.
Not long after the home was built, Mr.Ninteman was diagnosed with
cancer. He remained active as a Eucharist minister at Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Catholic Church, ministering to the sick andelderly,
until last May. Mr. Ninteman organized many construction projects at the
church and built the parish school. "He probably built as many as 25
Catholic Churches with Ninteman Construction," said daughter Clare Byrd.
"He was always ready to lend a helping hand or a hammer." Mr.
Ninteman was involved in the construction of the Immaculata and chapel at
USD and was head of construction for the seminary building on the Alcala
Park campus, Byrd said.
The early 1980s found him working on an expansion of Mission Valley
Center thatincluded a Saks Fifth Avenue, a clock tower, a fountain and a
strip of stores known as the fashion promenade.
Mr. Ninteman was born in Los Angeles. He grew up in Lancaster and Los
Angeles, graduating from University High School.
As a Seabee during the Korean War, he was primarily stationed in
Guam. Mr. Ninteman married Marlene Hooser in 1953 and began his
construction career in Pomona for a firm known as Shacklett and
Bradfield. He joined Ninteman Construction in 1958.
In addition to his wife and daughter Clare Byrd, who lives in
Santee, Mr. Ninteman is survived by other daughters, Louise Laff, of
Descanso,Beth Pangonis, of Henderson, Nev., and Patty Wade and Sara
Reeder, both of Lakeside; four sons, Luke, Matt, Mark and John Ninteman,
all of Lakeside; foster son, Hernan Arturo Cota, of San Diego County; a
